ROH Masters of the Craft Recap (4/29/2017)

by Nathan Neumann

Hello to the 4 Corners Radio universe! I attended a live ROH Show in Hopkins Minnesota last Saturday night and I have been waiting to talk about it for almost a week so now I shall do just that.  I’ve been to every show in Hopkins Minnesota since they started running the Eisenhower Community Center and this was by far the best show in Hopkins to happen thus far.

Dark Match
Vinny Marseglia vs. Shaheem Ali

Thoughts: Shaheem Ali seems to be the king of dark matches in Hopkins and that’s fine with me, as I don’t mind seeing him wrestle, as he’s a pretty good hand.  I wouldn’t go out of my way to watch a collection of his matches but if he’s in a ring in front of me I’ll watch it.  Vinny Marseglia is my least favorite member of the Kingdom because I never thought he fit the mould but he’s gotten a lot better since coming back to ROH after his first run that wasn’t very memorable.  This match was nothing to write home about but it did its job in making Vinny look good and giving him a win.  The finish of the match came when Vinny hit Ali with a Frog Splash to score the win via pinfall.

Result: Vinny Marseglia defeats Shaheem Ali via Frog Splash

Match 1
Jay Lethal vs. Beer City Bruiser

Thoughts: I wasn’t a fan of this match on paper but it translated in the ring very well, I’m not the biggest fan of Beer City Bruiser because to me he sticks out like a sore thumb which isn’t always a good thing and in this case it definitely isn’t.  However any match that Jay Lethal is in is immediately interesting, Jay Lethal is incapable of having a bad match and this match proves that fact.  Beer City Bruiser got his shit in and Jay Lethal did a great job of keeping the match together before getting the win via pinfall after the Lethal Injection.  I had no problem with this match at all, and its placement on the card was perfect.

Result: Jay Lethal defeats Beer City Bruiser via pinfall after the Lethal Injection

Match 2
War Machine vs. Shane Taylor and Rhett Titus

Thoughts: I’m still indifferent on the Rebellion and their purpose in ROH but they are quickly gaining steam and the addition of Shane Taylor to the stable makes it interesting.  War Machine is always entertaining live and this was no exception to the rule, Rhett and Shane both did a great job as well and a match that seemed very odd on paper was very well received by the fans inside of the arena.  The match came to an end when War Machine were able to get Taylor out of the ring long enough to hit Fall Out on Rhett Titus to pick up the win via pinfall.

Result: War Machine defeated Shane Taylor and Rhett Titus via pinfall after Fall Out

Match 3
Matt Taven vs. Adam Cole

Thoughts: This was the match I was most looking forward to and it didn’t deliver in my opinion.  These two are capable of doing so much more inside of the squared circle.  If this match was done to set up more from the two in the future that’ll work but if it was a stand-alone match it wasn’t very good.  Not to mention that the finish of the match was weird and seemed to leave a sour taste in the mouths of the fans in attendance.  The match came to an end when Matt Taven got the win via small package reversal.  Just an odd finish to a match that could’ve gone five minutes longer than it actually did.

Result:  Matt Taven defeated Adam Cole via pinfall with a small package reversal

Match 4
Ken Anderson vs. Marty Scrull {C}
ROH World Television Championship Match

Thoughts: Marty Scrull is very entertaining live and he was crazy over with the Hopkins crowd.  Ken Anderson was here because he’s a legend in Minnesota but him getting a TV title shot without earning it didn’t sit well with me but whatever.  This match was way better than I thought it was going to be and both Anderson and Scrull put in some good quality work.  The only thing I didn’t like about the match was the fact that I never once thought that Anderson could have won the title but once you put that out of your mind the match was really good and definitely worth checking out once this show comes out on DVD.  The match ended when Marty Scrull defeated Ken Anderson via small package to retain the ROH World Television Championship.  For those keeping score at home that’s two back-to-back matches that ended with the exact same finish.  I guess this show should’ve been called “Masters Of The Small Package”.

Result: Marty Scrull defeats Ken Anderson via pinfall with a Small Package to retain the ROH World Television Championship

Match 5
Cheeseburger and Will Ferrara vs. The Carnies

Thoughts: I had no idea who the Carnies were prior to this show but I became an instant fan after seeing them live.  Will Ferrara is a good wrestler I just wish he would get as far away from Cheeseburger as humanly possible.  I just don’t get the Cheeseburger gimmick and I probably never will; I think I missed the boat on that one.  This match was a lot of fun and the Carnies did a great job of getting themselves over with the Hopkins crowd.  I hope the Carnies are brought back in the future.

Result: Cheeseburger and Will Ferrara defeat The Carnies

Also I met Kerry Awful in the bar after the show after he spotted my hat and he wanted to take a picture with me, which I thought, was pretty cool.  Guy is a class act.

Match 6
Jay White vs. Punishment Martinez

Thoughts: I was really happy to see Jay White live and Punishment Martinez is growing on me.  Punishment Martinez is everything in ROH that Roman Reigns should be within WWE but I digress.  Jay White has come a long way in a short time and has really become a great pro wrestler.  I hope they bring Jay White back as a permanent fixture in ROH because the company could use a talent like him.  These two went all out in this match and they made it super entertaining.  I was concerned about how this match was going to turn out but it was a damn good showing from the both of them.  The finish came when Jay White defeated Punishment Martinez via roll up.  That’s now the third roll up in the show for those of you keeping track at home.  This is the only Roll Up finish that I could buy throughout the night as it made sense because of the size difference between these two.  It gave Jay White the win while keeping Punishment Martinez strong.

Result: Jay White defeats Punishment Martinez via pinfall after a Roll Up

After the match Punishment Martinez recovered and curb stomped Jay White into the ground to get some revenge for the loss.

Match 7
The Briscoes vs. The Motor City Machine Guns

Thoughts: I believe this is the first time I’ve ever seen The Motor City Machine Guns live as a team.  The Briscoes never fail to entertain me when seeing them live and they are still to this day the coolest people I’ve ever had the privilege of meeting.  I’ve also never seen a bad Briscoes match live, they always send me home happy even though this wasn’t the last match of the night.  This match stole the show, these teams went all over the place throughout the arena and it made for a great match to witness live.  I can’t wait to get my hands on this show on DVD so I can watch this match live because it was that good.  It was one of the best matches I’ve seen live in Hopkins since they began running this building.  It was a hell of a match that ended with Jay hitting a Jay Driller on Shelley and Mark hitting a Froggy Bow for the pinfall and the 1-2-3.

Result: The Briscoes defeats The Motor City Machine Guns via pinfall after a Jay Driller and a Froggy Bow combination.

Match 8
Bully Ray vs. Silas Young
No DQ Match

Thoughts: This match was a lot of fun and it was great to see Bully Ray live, I haven’t seen him live for a very long time and seeing him in ROH was great.  These two tore the house down with a match that was pier six brawl where they went all over the place and left everything they had in the ring.  They used the No DQ stipulation well to their advantage and they didn’t overdue it and the match didn’t overstay it’s welcome.  This match was exactly the length that it needed to be (about ten minutes or so) and they went all out the entire time.  The match ended when Bully Ray defeated Silas Young via pinfall after the Bully Bomb.

Result: Bully Ray defeats Silas Young via pinfall after the Bully Bomb

Main Event – Match 9
Dalton Castle and The Addiction vs. Adam Page and The Young Bucks

Thoughts: If I wasn’t burned out from the previous two matches I was definitely burned out after this one reached its conclusion.  There was no effective way of pacing this show in order to avoid that but it was a great conclusion to an outstanding show.  I would have liked to see the ROH World Champion in a singles match to showcase him better but it is what it is.  Hopefully if Daniels is still the champion by the next time they are in Hopkins he’ll get a singles match although that scenario isn’t likely.  This match was great even though I wasn’t a fan of 50 percent of the people in this match that being the Bucks and Kazarian.  Dalton Castle has gotten so good and hasn’t let his gimmick handicap him, he deserves some recognition for all that he’s done with the company I would like to see him get a TV title run but that remains to be seen.   The match ended when The Addiction did a variation of the Bucks finisher to get the win via pinfall.

Result: Dalton Castle and The Addiction defeat Adam Page and The Young Bucks via pinfall after the Addiction hits The Bucks with a variation of the Indy Taker.

Great match to cap off perhaps the best ROH Show in Hopkins,Minnesota to date.  I can’t wait until Ring Of Honor comes back to Hopkins because I won’t think twice before getting tickets.  I was very apprehensive about this show and I had a lot of low expectations going in but I was absolutely blown away with how good everything turned out to be.  Not a bad match on the show and I was thoroughly entertained.

A return date was not announced but I hope they come back sooner rather than later.  I can’t wait to go back!

That however will do it for me and this ROH review from ringside at Masters Of The Craft.  I can’t wait to relive all of the excitement of this show once it becomes available on DVD.
